I think the grey looks good with the mustard colour

Yes. Perfect fit. I have a Flickr series using the us race base with several
different shifters. Ironically one of the only ones that didn't work was a
sunrace DT shifter.

Bill--the shimano shifter works witht the sunrace thumbie mount? I own both but
never thought they'd work together!

Interesting. I'd been thinking about swapping my indexed thumbie to the left
side to get the shifters in that position. I guess I'll give it a whirl. Man,
that bike looks amazing..hopefully I'll see it at the book talk thing.

I had some time last night for mechanical meditation, so I went ahead and
did a small parts swap.
Reflective housing is a cool idea.

Bill! I was only making a topic for clarity and simplicity, in no way was
meaning to make you look like a village idiot. I think that upgrades like
brakes and wheelsets are often overlooked but can make the biggest
difference to a ride (or in this case, "a slow down"). Sorry for the tongue

Yeah, the XT level parallel push v-brakes are awful in terms of squeal, in
my experience. XTR only marginally better - I think the design just has
too many moving parts and pivots to wear out which leads to more potential
for squeal. Good idea on paper but not so good in practice, I couldn't g
I had that group on a Bstone MB-1, which I REALLY wish I hadn't sold. It
shifted and stopped like buttah.

I have a Cross Check built up with that entire gray XTR group. It's
lightweight and nicely understated. But most importantly, it's probably the
best functioning and most dependable set of components I've ever used. I
previously had it on an old Stumpjumper and I never once had to adjust a

Speaking of which, I do have the matching XTR greyish rear derailer on my
Atlantis. Perhaps I should switch that over...

I think a mustard Appa slathered with greyish black XTR bits would look
fabulous. Would it work appreciably better than the stock build? That's not the
point!

Like a good friend likes to say. If it's worth doing, then it's worth over
doing. Is it necessary? Never! Is it fun to do? Hells yes! Kind of like my
Hunqapillar equipped with an XTR 11-speed one-by drivetrain. Completely
unnecessary in a sense, but it's lots of fun and it sure looks prett
For myself, I believe replacing the brake cable housing was necessary.
The brakes worked before. The bike stopped when needed. I never felt
they were failing. But I wasn't happy with the feel of the brakes.
Let's just say they did not feel satisfactory to me.
My fix can't be classified as scientif
I think it looks great and was entertained.

I don't know that it would be fair for me to call you "wrong". If that's
how you wanted to understand what I did, then I wouldn't try to talk you
out of it.

Am I wrong to understand that you bought new brakes when all you needed to
do in the first place was replace your housing?
Thanks for the updates with your journey of the Appaloosa, it's been a fun
one to watch.

It's funny, I don't think I've ever considered the looks of v-brakes. They all
look basically the same to me, and the black Performance brakes practically
disappear on my dark green CLEM. I do love those XTR levers, though.

It's amazing how much different something as minor as the location of the
clamp bolt on a set of brake levers can make to the feel (comfort) of a
ride. One reason I love the Tektro FL540 levels that until quite recently,
Riv sold. The mounting bolt was unobtrusive and out of the way.

Back in the day the 1st gen parallel push mechanism was infamous for
squeal. I still have some NOS XT ones from back in the day that I never
tried.

I'll second that. I swapped out my brake housing as well. Don't remember
exactly which housing it is, but it's what my local bike shop has a spool
of. Much improved performance. No squish. I also swapped in some koolstop
pads. Same stock v-brakes. They work fine for me.

The new brakes feel much better in my hand, but the stock ones stopped the
bike just fine. The biggest single improvement was the brake housing. I
tried re-using the stock housing, and the rear brake was still "pretty darn
squishy", more squishy than I was willing to tolerate from XTR. That's
I would love to hear how the new brakes compare (stop, modulate) to the
generics. Thanks for the post. I love the simplicity and function of the
V-brakes I
have used.
