I use 700x40mm Mondials (measures 39.5) with sks fenders and 45mm Smart
Sams without fenders. The Smart Sams rubbed occasionally on a Pletscher
double kickstand when I cranked the pedals. I swapped it out for a single
and had no further problems.

Tim, I run 38mm Barlow's Pass with longboards and for the sake of fender
coverage, I wouldn't go wider. Fenders do their job best with some extra width.
P50s would be a better match for a tire beyond 38mm.
Regarding the max with no fenders, I wouldn't go beyond 45mm. I ran Smart Sams
last summe
Around 50 seems to be the consensus. No fenders.
