I rode today and had to use the 40tooth when I accidentally took the baby on
SingleTrack and up a hill! I don’t know if it would do 42. I am bad at
estimating these things and tend to just try and if it fails it fails.
On the other hand you could just use a slightly smaller front ring.

Do you think the derailleur could handle a 42t? I’m thinking about running a
10sp cassette on my Stumpjumper but just running friction. It’s an M737
derailleur and I can’t figure out if it will handle it.

I put a 10 speed sunrace on a weird low trail conversion of an old
Litespeed mtn. bike I have. Their cassettes are really nice and fairly
reasonable. I only went 10 because I got a deal on10 speed shifters with
some Paul Thumbies, I did the, not recommended but still mostly works,
3x10 but I
