Last year on day one of RAGBRAI I saw several e-bike riders. They were fine
and I didn't notice them doing anything crazy or our of line. It would suck
if you were the only one in a group ride without one. Met a group that was
doing a ride from somewhere in Iowa to someplace in Minnesota. Probab
Armand,
You are right on point with the U-Brake. GT continued to use them into the
early 90's on their bikes. Another good alternative is a SunTour Rollercam
brake. I have one of those in use on the rear of my 1994 Bridgestone MB-1
retro build using an Odyssey U4 adapter brake plate/stiffener.

Hey Jake,
U-brakes predominantly became the industry standard for most commonly
produced vintage mtb's mainly between 1987-88, though they started
appearing as soon as 1985. By 1989 most were gone. I'm open to being
corrected should someone know better. This is what I've observed in my

Hi Armand, lovely bikes, thanks for sharing. Plenty of care and attention
to detail evident in those builds and the photos you linked.
Curious if you (or any of the vintage MTB oldheads on the list) have any idea
why the larger model has a chainstay mounted U-brake vs the rear canti

A nod to Bill “the enabler” Lindsay
Chris, I’ve been riding both and I’d be fine with either one but if forced
to choose, I would keep the Clem for a lot of the same reasons you
outlined.
I need to work on bike storage as much as anything.

Speaking of the legend... I own a set of 650b wheels that he built! It's an
XTR m960 hubset laced to velocity aerohead symmetric front/asymmetric rear
rims. I haven't found the right bike to use them on as of late. I'd love
some suggestions on which bike would look good with them. Since I don't

I would add…I am willing to trade any parts for a pair of silver or pewter

What a delightful film. I really enjoyed the dramatic reenactments of the
draisine and velocipede. Also Bill and Billy educating Mr. Ward on those
modern bicycles they were riding. I love being reminded that these
beautifully simple machines have remained largely unchanged for decades.
