The 63-66 angle is for 29ers and road bikes with more drop than say a 26" wheel mtb which would use the 66-69. If you look at all the Shimano road FD specs they specify 61-66 CS angle. You must remember too that the XT, even the trekking group are designed for the 50mm chainline of an outb

Want to run a Sugino XD600 triple with 24-36-48 but the FD-M780 says it’s a max 44t chainring ... I’m already using a 46t chainring and I know the specs always have some wiggle room, but figured 48t is too high for the M780. Looking at the T780 (M for mountain, T for trekking apparently). It say
