Instead of downloading the zip file, download the tar.gz file from [1]
checkpoint_0.4.10.tar.gz
and at a command line run
R CMD INSTALL checkpoint_0.4.10.tar.gz
[1] https://cran.r-project.org/src/contrib/Archive/checkpoint/
