I would also suggest the package raster, which usually make it much
easier to extract spatial NetCDF-data than direct use of the
NetCDF-packages.

There are at least three packages that can read NetCDF in native form,
RNetCDF, ncdf and ncdf4.
There are other options. Explore these ones.
