Hi Tim, Thanks for the suggestion. I think the author of the mgcv package (Simon Wood) is/ was (?) on this list, so I thought I'd give it a try here first. Plus I already emailed him recently about a different issue, so I didn't want to come on too strongly by emailing him again so shortly after.
