I recommend and use http://www.clamav.net/
I don't have the exact time frame, but I know it was catching mydoom
within 12 ( probably 6 ) hours of start on infection.

I'm very happy with Sophos. It's light and fast and the Sophos people
get the virus fixes out as fast as anyone.
