I did some testing with libgl1-mesa-glx versions from snapshots.
the problem seems to have been introduced between 7.8.2-2 and
7.9+repack-1.
Also I can even get it to crash when I open a non-existing png but
"opening" an non-existing jpg works.
Opening and showing an existing jpg also crashes.
