though there are indications that the "-Wl,-rpath" method is considered the
recommended/canonical/future way to do

The symptoms from FreeBSD look a little different:
Only gethostbyname affected only on 2.7 and 3.3 on all freebsd versions (9, 10,
11).
Python 3.2 was not tested (freebsd port was deleted), but likely affected as
well

Still an issue on 2.7, 3.2, 3.3. Updating Versions to reflect this fact and
assist downstreams in backporting a forthcoming fix to those versions that
won't get it due to security-fix only branches.
