This keeps getting mentioned, but people keep coming onto IRC and the mailing list re-reporting it, so we really need to get this out. In kernel 2.6.18-274.7.1.el5 they changed the way a select() call to proc returns, and it totally breaks ruby. See https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/10418
