I have both the touchpad and mouse working with this XF86Config:
(notice that in my config the touchpad is /dev/mouse and USB
mouse is /dev/input/mice, -although it will work with /dev/mouse,
but no touchpad then- this way you can have both devices
working together)

I had the same exact problem with my laptop. What I did was including ACPI
not a as a module but compiled into the kernel, (I checked "Y" option
instead of "M")
Regarding APM I also included it but passed apm=off to the kernel
parameters.
After recompiling with these settings I checked the /pr
