gdm is started by init
See in /etc/inittab, there is a line id:5:/etc/X11/prefdm os something
like that (last line, normally)
That's it that start gdm (or kdm or xdm).
If it doesn't start, try a
init 3 (going to runlevel 3)
end then just after
init 5 (going to runlevel 5)
This should bring X dis
way for about a month and a half.

Hi,
One question:
Back in RH6.x, RH shipped with xfs instead of X11 doing the font
rendering itself. It made X11 faster.
Now, we have a new lib: Xft
Does it the same as the old way of doing things? I mean rendering in the
application through a lib instead of a server like xfs?
Or should xfs be po
;-)
Is there a solution for this (apart from rebuilding the kernel)?
