to install. Strange though a window popped up said checking system

Please show that you have the gcc-c++* package installed.
Show us the output of:
$ rpm -qa 'gcc*'
You'll most likely also need the libstdc++* packages as well as
seve
I'd run "redhat-config-packages" from root in a bash shell (terminal),
and then select at the bottom portion of the screen "Development
Packages" I think, if memory serves me correctly. That should install
everything your missing, methinks.

gcc-3.2-7.rpm and others but I'm still getting these messages.

I don't know about 8, but earlier releases had it as a separate package.
