To follow-up, I eventually figured I could update the RH8.0 installation with
the necessary tools to recompile source, without a complete
re-installation, and I did so,
Then I went to the e1000-*/src/ directory:

gcc -DLINUX -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -O2 -pipe -Wal
