Thanks for the suggestion, but I had already reset the PMU and zapped the
PRAM, with no appreciable effect, before the original post.

Enabled the screen blanking feature with:
sudo wsconsctl display.kbdact=on display.screen_off=6
After a minute of inactivity, the screen did not blank. Indeed, it went to
full brightness. Pressing a key brings the brightne
