Okay, a few days later and: 1. That 2nd USB sound card I bought sort of sounds like ... crap 2. I've experimented with Virtual Audio Cable and found that I can solve the problem and not even require that second sound card OR Virtual Audio Cable. The key is in a comment in the Virtual Audio Cable
