I too faced the same , try this and it should work.
After setting the Drive mode to Legacy change the
drive sequence below to [SATA P0/P1 | PATA Pri/sec]
where SATA Drives become derault followed by your PATA
devices such as CDROM.

I don't think that is true. When in legacy mode, you can select which
drives you want active.
You can make this selection in the sub-menu which appears, when you
set to legacy mode.

Try using a distro which has the 2.6.x kernel. The 2.4 tree does not have
support for SATA. Mandrake 10.0 would be a good choice in my opinion.
