I had problem installing GoogleEarth on 64-bit Ubuntu.
Installing ia32-libs solved my problem.
I'm not sure that will work with your case, but it's used to install
32-bit applications on 64-bit OS.

It can be windows firewall, which is blocking ICMP packets. Try disable it, and
then ping.

I had asked configuration regarding making ad-hoc between win7 and ubuntu 9.10,
someone at ubuntuforums.org suggested me to look into samba configurations for
this stuff!
Unfortunately, it has got HUGE options, and cudnt find anything particular
about ad-hoc.
