Usually they don't give any root/user or Default password until user is
allowed to do some configuration using shell. You can contact the vendor
only.

I had a similar configuration (celeron 1.1 ghz, 256 MB) sometime back.
I installed ubuntu 7.1. All works fine but X server (very slow
response) .
top showed overloaded cpu usage with X. If you use it only for dev
using emacs, you can live with it.
