[PLUG] Weird Inode values

I am currently using the EXT3 filesystem(FC 6). Everytime I moodify a file the value of the inode of that file changes.I am talking abt the inode value displayed by either the 'ls -i' command or the 'stat'. From what I know in theory ,this shouldn't happen. Can anybody please explain why this is
