Ok this might help you.
the device should be /dev/usb/ttyUSB{0,1,2...}
I think it was /dev/usb/ttyACM earlier.
You need the "acm.(k)o" module to get this device USB modems working.

Nothing. I tried that already. It gives a lot of messages about the modem
state (initializing, activating etc.) but *not* mention the device assigned
after the modem act

I have also seen somthing like a USB to serial connector for Reliance. Is
anything like that available for Tata?

Because I asked for it. The modem cost Rs. 2000, while the router cost Rs.
3000. The router based connection is simple enough. If this doesn't work out
in the next few days,
