Likely to be true. Grub files are in /boot if grub does not support Raid
then it can't find its other files
Typically, /boot is not placed under raid. It does not add value and
complicates things.

This has been driving me nuts for 2 days now:
I got a new h/w with 6 SATA drives, am installing it to use software raid:
/boot -- /dev/md0 -- raid 1
swap -- /dev/md1 -- raid 0
/ -- /dev/md2 -- raid 6
/dev/md0 consists of sda1 and sdb1
/dev/md1 consists of sdc1,sdd1,sde1 and sdf1
/dev/md
