This seems to have resolved itself over the past few days. I have a strong suspicion that a dangling symbolic link in /etc/alternatives to /etc/ld.so.conf.d/i386-linux-gnu_GL.conf was the culprit. Doing 'sudo update-alternatives --all' removed it and that solved a bunch of issues on that particula
