I can report that is not problematic to install smplayer 0.8.3
on current Debian Sid.
The ordinary Debian build steps will produce a binary without
any problems; at least in my case. Essentially, it is, as root:
apt-get build-deps smplayer
apt-get sour
Package: smplayer
Version: 0.8.0-1
Severity: wishlist

Just to point out that there are new versions of smplayer, 0.8.1,
0.8.2 and 0.8.3.
