I found my own answer...
Problems:
1. I wasn't authenticating with enough rights to see certain fields.
2. I was getting the error if the field was empty.
3. I wasn't including all the fields in my search parameters.
4. You must use all lowercase when referring to fields. ie givenname, not
gi
