Well I have php 5 working with Apache httpd 2.0.49 on a full
installation of Fedora Core 2.

Real easy fix. Add this line to your httpd.conf file:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml .php3
Which simply tells Apache to use PHP to handle all of the pages with those
extensions.
