I ran into the same problem with 4.0.5
I solved it by creating libgd.a and pointing the configure script to the
directory containing it.
the gd 2.0.1 readme says:
gd lets you create PNG or JPEG images on the fly. To use gd in your
program, include the file gd.h, and link with the libgd.a libra
