I've tried to install GD 1.8.4 with FreeType 2.1.2 and PHP 4.2.2 on FreeBSD.
first i've compiled FreeType with this options:
make CFG="--prefix=/usr/local"
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
make install
it worked fine "after" i've installed gnu make ;)

The output of phpinfo(), in the section relative to gd, says:
GD Support enabled
GD Version 2.0 or higher
FreeType Supportenabled
FreeType Linkagewith freetype
JPG Support

I have problem with configure php3 with gd1.3 enabled. Everything seems to
be OK during configuration, but there is not php3_gd.so after all !?
I have php3.0.6 + gd1.3 + apache1.3.3 under solaris2.6.
I tried to cofigure it with :
--with-mysql --with-apache=../apache1.3.3 --with-gd=
