im running mysql version 3.33.41-1 and plan to upgrade to ver 3.23.55-1. If
i simply install the rpms, would the PHP installation break ?

I have never used Solaris but if it supports DSOs you could try this -
then you could simply cp the relevant pdf.so to the php lib directory
and add
extension=pdf.so in the php.ini file
