from rpm or from source?
there is 2 ways to install php, as module or as static,
both have different ways of installing..
pls refer to the INSTALL file located in the distributed source files...

did u copy your c:\php\php.ini.dist to c:\windows\php.ini ?
did u copy c:\php/php4ts.dll to c:\windows\system32\?
try restart ur apache after u have copied both file..

else, u can simply --with-mysql without any parameter for it...

it depends on how u install it..
if u install it with rpm, u could use the rpm features to upgrade ur installation of
php
if u install it from source,
u could simply replace the older version by simply configure and install the latest
version...
once u are done with it, simply restart

coonfigure with apache 2.0 apxs...
simply
--with-apxs2=/pathtoapache/bin/apxs

normally, u should consider it as reinstalling the latest version...
don't border about the last compiled, php4.0.6 will replace the last version
if u were to install it...
if u install with rpm, u can uninstall the rpm from redhat rpm manager..

when i use the stable version 1.3.2.0, it works fine :)
