After reinstalling PHP 4.3.4 I have not been able to work sessions. Receipt

Yeah, I read that too, I didn't notice the blip about it being fixed
in php5 though. They also say they won't fix it in php4.
The interesting thing is that I was able to compile and make install
at one point, but apache would not load libphp4.so, saying undefined
symbol: OPENSSL_add_all_algorithms
but what errors are you getting?

I can log into mysql ok and create dbs and tables and use the various admin
commands/functions, just can't get there from php.

How you do know?
Do you get errors when trying to access the mysql_* functions? - unknown
function errors?
Or can you just not login to mysql with PHP?

I am trying to get php 4.3.4, mysql 4.0.16, and apache 2.0.49 to run
properly on redhat 8.0. The problem is php does not know about mysql,
apache is running and php is ok with apache. Mysql is also running ok. I am
also a newbie to all 4. At this point in time I am ready to wipe the drive

I think you're a bit confused, you don't login with that command. Before
running it again check ps -aux | grep mysql...to see if mysql is acutally
started.
if you need to re-run then use -> 'safe_mysqld --user=mysql &' - The &
will spawn the process in the background.

I am completely new to php. I have installed
php on redhat linux 9 by rpm package. I have also installed mysql with
php4 which comes with redhat linux 9.
php is running fine on linux with apache
server. But there is one problem with mysql. Whenever I try to login with
safe_start it starts and ends
