Scott, I use GNU gcc (gcc-3.1-sd-11.00.depot) on HPUX. It seems to create fewer build errors than HP's ANSI C compiler. It can be downloaded at the HPUX porting archive: http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/ Also, make sure you hack your apxs script and replace any references to DSO extensions of .so to .sl
