I figured it out. In tcsh I needed to use:
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/openwin/lib:
/usr/local/postgres/lib:/usr/local/ssl/lib:/usr/local/etc/mm/lib:/lib
instead of
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH= ( /usr/local/lib /usr/lib /usr/openwin/lib
/usr/local/postgres/lib /usr/local/ssl/lib

It does all go!
The secret (from Bill Stoddard, see

Ok, noone has responded to my last email yet, so here is a quick version
with actual specifics now.

Actually, I don't think that's the problem. He's doing a DSO install not a
static hence the --with-apxs not --activate-module
Your problem could be that you only need one AddType declaration for all
three extensions, like this:

> > AddType application/x
You're recompiling Apache and then php. You must configure apache like
./configure --enable-module=so
and then configure php with your --with-apxs and it should work.

Looks like you have made some problem with the line
--activate-module
Most users have a habit of
--activate-module=.../libmodphp4.a
change it to
--activate-module=.../libphp4.a

I downloaded php4 and configured it: -with--mysql and -with--apxs. This
took fine the configure make and make install worked great. Add the

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4
