I always using session together with header() and never got a
problem. Here's something might be a hint to you:

Well probably because you've got that automatic
PHPSESSID thing carryover in your php.ini which
through your situation indicates that it doesn't work
in a header() so either you'll put cookies on, or use PHPSESSID.
