I would think that a Java applet would be your best bet. You can have
real-time updates instead of page reloads. However, you will need to
write a server to handle the specific requests for the applet. That can
be done in Java, C/C++, or even Perl. I would prefer Perl because of

compile into the PHP engine itself -- this I imagine can hook into the
