I had a bad experience with phpBB ver 1 some years ago...someone defaced my
forum index page...and it runs pretty slow..so thats out (they got in
through the upload image function, its been fixed).

Personally, I hate almost all forum software other than my own (still
in Dev), but that's a different story.
I've been frequenting the Textpattern forums [1] lately, which use
PubBB [2], which is pretty good, lightweight, PHP driven, with a
reasonable grip on standards and CSS.
