Wait, there is already in-image support to obtain the current locale and
language setting.
Did you try

(and there is a setting to enable its obtention automatically on startup).
Actually if somebody uses it for real and tests it well that would be a
big +1 :)

environment? Scratch on the same platform (linux / french) does it.
