I'm trying to connect to my Linux box using your tool. I can telnet to it but when I
enter the info fo Connect to server, I enter the ip, keep the port at 5432, and enter
the password for postgres, I get the error, a large negative number and "could not
connect to remote socket".

Can you confirm that PostgreSQL is running with tcp/ip sockets enabled
on your server?
