You want to find the loudest point in the recording , and then set your recording level making sure that the peak level is in the green or safe zone. If you determine your loudest point in the recording first you shouldn't have to go back and check your levels every five seconds. . . . Orig

You could do this with Sound Forge. You would record two individual audio files. In SF pressing the tab key lets you select just the left or right channel. So you could open both files. Have only the left selected in one file and only the right selected in the other. Then you could copy one
