getting microphone to work on Vista

Hello there, I am having trouble trying to get the microphone to work on Vista. I have a Sony Vaio Vgcra820G which has two places to hook up the mike. I have it in the headphone/mike port now but when I use for instance, Goldwave to try to record I just get hiss no volume. Can some one guide
