Hi, was wondering the same thing .
So I asked a sound engineer friend of mine.
The story is, the surface layer of the disk, i.e.. the data layer where
the information is burnt, is the same.
The difference is that if you buy music cdrws, some royalty money go's
off to the record companies.
So buy cd

I thought that the only difference between the two was the format in which
you burn the CD. Is this not true; is there a real difference between the
two types of CDs?

Hi Tom,
I have always had the understanding,
that the difference is cdr, or cdrw.
And don't expect good results if you try to make a music cd with a cdrw.
For more imformation go to:

There is a link there which will take you to more imformation on cd's than

My "personal" stand alone yamaha burner will not recognize data cds. You
have to use audio cds, whether you want to or not. This, as I understand
it, is standard for these kinds of burners.
I still don't know what the difference between data and audio cds is, but
it applies to both cdr and cd
In other words.."CDRWs should only be used for "data" burning?

Hi Chris. You can put a lot more music on a data CD than you can with an
audio CD. Up to ten hours worth.

Hi Tom,
That is my practice!
I use cdrw's for my daily backups, because
I do a seven day cycle, so
every week each disk is erased and re-written.
Of course, I also back up my data files to another hard drive.
I use cdr's, for permanent storage of data, and audio cd's.

Yeah! playing MP3's shouldn't be a problem but playing DVD'S is another matter
though the odd thing is that you can get smaller players (the walkman type)
that will handle DVD'S and MP3's.

Just to clarify things, the yamaha burner to which I referred is a stand
alone burner that burns audio cds only, and you have to burn them on discs
called audio discs. It will accept both cdr and cdrw audio discs, but it
won't accept data discs of either type, and it won't burn data at all. I
