It has an mp3 extention, and when you try to play it, it just sounds like
data, almost as if it ws a zip file with the wrong extention.

plugins that allow winamp to play real audio streams, but i've never been

Hi. Well, I personally prefer to use 192kbps, 44.1 KHZ stereo, and for
ripping cds I use Easy CDDA Extractor, not to be confused with Roxio Easy
CD Creator. You may notice a bit of a difference if you rip your tracks at
192k rather than 128k, so give that a try just for the fun of it. It's just
