I'm not sure, but I once heard that AAC encoding may be the best!

Reed! I've always used the free CD Extractor / CDEX for ripping. If
you rip at 1411 KBPS you're getting no compression, that's as good as it
gets.
Most people will want some compression. It's a trade off between
storage space and quality. Storage space is inversely proportional to KBP
it should play back with winamp

back with windows media player without any problems. Don't know about

Yes, certainly the software you use makes one hell of a difference as
error recovery when ripping is extremely important, the best software
I've seen for this is Exact Audio copy.
