Well alt r does record but hit r after you hit control r.

I don't use scripts with SF 8. All one needs to do is after pressing
control+r, just press, "r" for record. I don't make any other adjustments
in the record window.

i think what you wanna do is to shape the recording. Just select what you
have recorded, by placing your start and finnish markers where they need to
go, if you don't know how to do that let me know so that I can assist you.
Once that is done, you wanna hit alt c to go to the effect menu. From
