I would've blamed android as well except the factory firmware and another
router I have without openwrt works correctly. I also used to use another
openwrt router, a dlink 615 which workes without any issues.

Thanks, I just tried running hostapd in debug mode but the output looks
normal, it just shows that the device has connected successfully. I will
try tcpdump as soon as I can and post the results here.

I'm no expert, but you could try running hostapd in debug mode and 'Capture
Management Traffic' to see what you can find:
