I meant use the kernel package with the -virtual suffix. On Ubuntu 11.10, there's one called linux-virtual which installs the right thing for you. You're right that you shouldn't need to do this on 11.10, because that's a 3.0 kernel which should work on anything. The -virtual kernel just has
