Erik,
The error means that your client has closed connection before SSL
negotiation.
I guess you're trying to connect SSL service with non-SSL client (=
your Outlook is not configured to use SSL). Am I right?

Thanks to information provided me by a member of this list, Paul Gear, I
have been able to set up a server certificate which MS Outlook 97 does not
complain about. If anyone should need instructions please let me know and
I could post my experience.
