Is there a maximum size for SSL application data?

Hi - we are trying to send various lengths of application data to OpenSSL server from a Java client and find that lengths above ~16K cause :-   SSL_Routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:Data length too long   So are we saying that if the app data > 16K we have to split it into multiple sends?   TIA David
